What is the maturity score?
Cognocient measures your FinOps maturity against the FinOps Foundation's Crawl / Walk / Run model. The score (0–100) is calculated daily from your actual product usage — not a self-assessment survey.
| Phase | Score | FinOps name | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawl | 0–33 | Inform | Proxy connected, spend visible, basic tagging |
| Walk | 34–66 | Optimize | Budgets set, enforcement active, waste reducing |
| Run | 67–100 | Operate | Full governance, board reports, routing rules active |
How the score is calculated
Twelve binary signals contribute to the score. Each signal is either met or not — partial credit is not given.
Crawl signals (33 points)
| Signal | Points | How to meet it |
|---|---|---|
| Proxy connected | 10 | At least one API call has flowed through Cognocient |
| 50+ API calls tracked | 10 | Cumulative call count reaches 50 |
| Feature tagging >50% | 13 | More than half of calls carry X-Cost-Feature |
Walk signals (33 points)
| Signal | Points | How to meet it |
|---|---|---|
| Budget created | 10 | At least one active budget exists |
| Enforcement active | 13 | At least one budget in Block or Degrade mode |
| Feature tagging >80% | 5 | 80%+ of calls carry X-Cost-Feature |
| Multiple budgets (3+) | 5 | Three or more active budgets |
Run signals (33 points)
| Signal | Points | How to meet it |
|---|---|---|
| Board report generated | 10 | At least one PDF report has been generated |
| Routing rules active | 10 | At least one active routing rule configured |
| Full tagging (>90%) | 7 | 90%+ of calls carry X-Cost-Feature |
| 5+ active budgets | 6 | Five or more active budgets |
Reading the dashboard widget
The maturity widget on your dashboard shows:
- Score ring — Your score (0–100) as a circular progress indicator coloured by phase (amber = Crawl, blue = Walk, green = Run)
- Phase badge — Current phase and FinOps capability name
- Check pills — All 12 signals with ✓ (met) or ○ (not met) status
- Next step — The single most impactful action to improve your score, with a direct link
The maturity score is recalculated on every dashboard load. Completing the next step will move the score immediately — no waiting for a nightly batch.
Typical progression
Most customers follow this path:
- Day 1 — Connect the proxy, first calls flow. Score: ~10 (Crawl)
- Day 2–3 — Add
X-Cost-Featureheaders. Score: ~33 (top of Crawl) - Week 1 — Create budgets with enforcement. Score: ~56 (Walk)
- Week 2 — Generate first board report, configure routing rules. Score: 67+ (Run)
Why this matters for FinOps
The FinOps Foundation defines three capability domains: Inform, Optimize, and Operate. Organizations in the Operate phase have unit economics per feature, automated enforcement, and board-level reporting. Cognocient's maturity score gives you a concrete, actionable path to get there.
