What Bifrost does well
Where the two differ
You run it vs we run it
Bifrost is software you deploy, scale and keep patched; Maxim lists clustering, adaptive load balancing, guardrails and private networking among its enterprise capabilities. Cognocient AI is managed only: nothing to host, with a published latency benchmark for the extra network hop.
What budgets follow
Bifrost budgets attach to virtual keys, teams and customers. Cognocient AI budgets can also follow request-level tags (feature, department, user, environment) and a single agent run, so one key can serve many features that are each capped separately.
Who the output is for
Bifrost reports to engineers through its UI, logs and Prometheus. Cognocient AI adds chargeback by GL account, FOCUS export, cost per business outcome, customer margin and board-ready PDF reports.
Pricing
Bifrost’s open-source edition is free to run on your own infrastructure; enterprise pricing is not published. Cognocient AI publishes its prices: free on one provider, then $99, $499 or $1,299 per month.
Side-by-side comparison
| Capability | Bifrost | Cognocient AI |
|---|---|---|
| License / hosting | Apache 2.0, self-hosted (enterprise tier available) | Managed service |
| Gateway overhead | Microseconds in-process (vendor benchmark) | One network hop; benchmark published in the docs |
| Providers | 20+ providers | 10 provider types plus any OpenAI-compatible endpoint |
| Budgets | Virtual key, team, customer (hierarchical) | Feature, department, user, environment, key, spend group, run, org (stacked) |
| Over-limit behaviour | Requests blocked | Block, degrade to a cheaper model, alert, shrink to fit |
| Per-run agent budgets | Not documented | ✅ X-Cost-Run-Budget, every plan |
| Semantic caching | ✅ | ✅ (Growth+) |
| MCP gateway | ✅ | ✅ (Business plan) |
| Emergency kill switch | Deactivate keys | ✅ account-wide Emergency Freeze |
| FOCUS export, chargeback, board reports | ❌ | ✅ chargeback and reports (Base+), FOCUS export (Growth+) |
| Reconcile against provider bills | ❌ | ✅ (Growth plan) |
| Published pricing | Open source free; enterprise not published | ✅ |
Bifrost details are from the maximhq/bifrost GitHub README and Maxim AI’s published articles as of November 2, 2026. The split between Bifrost’s open-source and enterprise features is not fully spelled out there; check docs.getbifrost.ai before relying on a specific feature.
When to choose each
Choose Bifrost when
- You want an open-source gateway you host inside your own network
- Microsecond overhead at high RPS is a hard requirement
- Budgets per key, team and customer are enough
- You have the platform team to run, scale and upgrade it
Choose Cognocient AI when
- You don’t want to operate a gateway
- Budgets have to follow features, users and agent runs on shared keys
- Finance needs chargeback, FOCUS data or board reports
- You want to see your spend from a CSV before routing any traffic
Frequently asked questions
Is Bifrost open source?
Yes, under Apache 2.0. Maxim AI also offers an enterprise edition; its README lists clustering, adaptive load balancing, guardrails and private networking among enterprise capabilities.
Does Bifrost support budgets?
Yes. Virtual keys carry their own budgets and rate limits, and budgets nest across virtual keys, teams and customers.
Can Cognocient AI be self-hosted?
No. It is a managed service. If self-hosting is a requirement, Bifrost or LiteLLM fit better.
Bifrost and Cognocient AI make different bets: Bifrost on a fast, self-hosted engine you control; Cognocient AI on a managed service whose output finance can use. If your bottleneck is gateway performance inside your own VPC, start with Bifrost. If it is explaining and controlling the bill, start with Cognocient AI.
