OpenRouter vs Cognocient AI: model marketplace vs cost-control gateway

OpenRouter and Cognocient AI both give you one OpenAI-compatible endpoint for many models, so they get compared. They solve different problems: OpenRouter sells you access to models; Cognocient AI governs spend on the provider accounts you already have.

What OpenRouter does well

Hundreds of models from many providers behind one API and one credit balance
No markup on inference: you pay the provider’s listed token price; the fee is on buying credits
Automatic fallback to the next provider when one returns an error, and routing variants that sort by price or throughput
Per-API-key credit limits with daily, weekly or monthly resets, manageable through provisioning keys
Prompts and completions are not logged by default
Bring-your-own-key, free up to an allowance per month, then a 5% fee

Where the two differ

Whose account pays the provider

With OpenRouter credits, OpenRouter is the customer of record with each provider and you pay OpenRouter. With Cognocient AI, your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Bedrock or Vertex AI accounts are billed directly, with your negotiated rates, enterprise agreements and cloud commitments intact. Cognocient AI never resells tokens.

Fees

OpenRouter charges a fee when you buy credits (third-party breakdowns put it at about 5.5% by card) and a 5% fee on BYOK usage above the monthly allowance. Cognocient AI is a flat subscription ($99 to $1,299 per month, free on one provider) with no per-token or percentage fee.

Budgets

OpenRouter limits credit per API key. Cognocient AI budgets attach to features, departments, users, environments, spend groups and individual agent runs as well as keys, are reserved atomically before each call, and can degrade to a cheaper model instead of failing.

Attribution and finance

OpenRouter’s activity view filters by key and model. Cognocient AI tags every call by feature, team, user, customer and run, and turns that into chargeback, FOCUS export, customer margin and board reports.

When to choose each

Choose OpenRouter when

  • You want to try many models without opening an account with each provider
  • You prefer prepaid credits to monthly provider invoices
  • Your spend is modest, so a percentage fee costs less than a subscription
  • A credit limit per key is all the budget control you need

Choose Cognocient AI when

  • You have direct provider contracts, cloud commitments or negotiated rates to keep
  • Spend is large enough that a percentage fee outgrows a flat subscription
  • Budgets must follow features, teams, customers and agent runs
  • Finance needs chargeback, FOCUS data or board reports

Frequently asked questions

Does OpenRouter mark up token prices?

OpenRouter says there is no markup on inference: you pay the provider’s listed price. It charges a fee when you buy credits, and a 5% fee on bring-your-own-key usage above the monthly free allowance.

Can I set a spending limit in OpenRouter?

Yes, per API key: each key can have a credit limit that resets daily, weekly or monthly. Limits by feature, user or agent run need a gateway that attributes calls, such as Cognocient AI.

Can I put OpenRouter behind Cognocient AI?

Yes. Add OpenRouter as a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint and send custom/<model>. You get Cognocient AI budgets and attribution on top, though OpenRouter calls are costed at your own entered rates rather than per model.

If you need breadth of models and a single prepaid balance, OpenRouter is excellent at that. If your company already pays OpenAI, Anthropic or a cloud provider directly and needs to control and explain that spend, a gateway in front of those accounts is the better fit.
